The Weather Network

Challenge

The Weather Network is Canada's leading provider of weather information across all mediums including cable, satellite, online, mobile and newspapers. Over two million Canadians use their widgets, including the popular WeatherEye desktop application. The Weather Network wanted to utilize their North American weather data to create a niche version of the WeatherEye that would appeal to golf enthusiasts.

"We know that Canadians love being outdoors all year and especially in our short summer season. Many Canadians also love being on the golf course. WeatherEye GOLF is part of an evolution for our desktop widgets and downloads and our continuing efforts to bring critical weather information to Canadians, wherever they may be," says Carrie Lysenko, Manager of Online Applications.

Solution

The imason project team partnered with developers and designers at Pelmorex Media Inc. to create a Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 desktop application for WeatherEye GOLF. We chose Silverlight because it provided benefits that other options lacked:

  • Silverlight runs as a web application, making it easy to update in the future
  • Silverlight can be embedded on a site, making it easy to port WeatherEye GOLF over to any web site
  • Silverlight is platform independent and will run with the same integrity on both PCs and Macs

The WeatherEye GOLF provides current and local weather related information for over 17,000 golf courses in Canada and the US. Users can quickly and easily get immediate access to real time weather data for a local golf course right from a temperature icon in the system tray. It can then be expanded to a small window that provides current weather observations, short term forecast data, local weather warnings and access to golf course contact information.

Result

In addition to providing key weather information to golfers, The Weather Network partnered with Nike Golf Canada to add essential product information for fans that they could use to improve their game and their day out on the course. "We recognized The Weather Network as a leader in Canada providing both weather information and widget applications. We see the WeatherEye GOLF as a natural fit for our brand to help educate the consumer on our vast line of equipment and apparel for all weather conditions in Canada," says Tyler Keenan, Brand Communications Manager, Nike Golf Canada.
